Founded Background

The founding of Silence starts with the story of Li Ching – a youth with hearing disability.

On March 1st, 2008 Li Ching leapt to her death out of unbearable frustration.  Those who know Li Ching describe her as someone that is full of passion in life, an accomplished artist and chess player.  However, because of her hearing disability she was often misunderstood and despite her talent and university credentials, she was never able to find gainful and meaningful employment.

Since childhood, Li Ching has bravely overcome countless hurdles that society thrown her way.  For someone with her courage and zeal (to life), choosing to end her own life is perplexing.  While someone find it hard to comprehend or interpret it as momentary despair, those who understand Li Ching know that it is a selfless act – her way to protest against our society’s apathy towards the hearing impaired and to demonstrate that this group’s urge to be  understood.  Despite being heartbroken, Li Ching’s family found peace and consolation knowing that her death brought about media and societal attention that ultimately helped to raise our sensitivity towards the hearing impaired.

Li Ching once expressed eloquently in an essay, “… there was a time, I thought I was a dragon (in Chinese Dragon sounds like the word “deaf”) who came to earth to receive a new pair of ears.  Somehow, I never found them and all the while I kept searching and asking myself over and over again what is it that I am looking for and does it really exist … ?”

For her entire life Li Ching, like any passionate youth, seeks opportunity to prove herself, to demonstrate her talent so as to gain acceptance in society. Her journey, however, was fraught with hurdles because she is “different” from the rest of us.

Although Li Ching is no longer with us, her family’s love and care for her live on.  In order to commemorate Li Ching and her everlasting spirit, her family along with a group of enthusiastic volunteers decided to form “Silence” in July 2008.  By establishing Silence, they aim to turn sorrow into strength – to serve the needs of the hearing impaired, to promote a barrier free society, and continue the unfinished path walked on by Li Ching.
